HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound)

is one of the treatments for prostate cancer that is currently being discussed in the media as a new hope against the most common cancer in men. However, the treatment method for malignant tumors in the prostate has so far not been adequately researched and tested. Worldwide, very few patients have been reported to have been treated with HIFU worldwide for prostate cancer  treated. Additionally, there is little information about side effects that may occur several years after treatment has been completed. Data on long-term cure rates are not are not expected within the nex five years. Only then can conclusions be drawn about the long-term cure rates and long-term side effects of HIFU.

 

The disadvantage of HIFU treatment:

Ultrasonic waves with high energy hit the prostate. The prostatic tissue is destroyed by these ultrasonic waves. In contrast to the benign enlargement of the prostate, the prostate cancer  usually develops in the area of ​​so-called prostatic capsule, and thus in close proximity to the rectum. The HIFU treatment for prostate cancer, therefore, bears the risk of bowel injury and fistula formation. Because of the extreme heat on the body, the male potency is often adversely affected. Preserving potency in a so called partial treatment is possible, however, here the prostate tissue is not completely removed and therefore the final elimination of the tumor is not ensured.

Above all, larger prostate volumes cannot be treated because not enough energy is reached in the inner zones of the organ, so that prior to the HIFU a surgical reduction (TURP) is required. In the end, this cannot be called a "minimally invasive procedure".
