Modern Therapies

Prostate Carcinoma:

I
n the United States, more patients are treated with advanced forms of radiotherapy than with the commonly practiced radical removal of the prostate.

Encouraged by this development and the good results as well as the overall positive experiences reported by the leading medical research institutions of the United States, we have performed permanent seed implantation with iodine seed strands since August 2000. The published conclusive success rates of the American work groups provided us with the additional affirmation needed to perform this brachytherapy. Within the scope of the latest work published by us, these outstanding American data could be reproduced for the first time in a European center. Regarding the indication for mono-brachytherapy, we follow the recommendations of the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS), which provide the basis for the recommendations to the European and German subject related organizations.

The combined HDR afterloading therapy with iridum-192, is a second successful treatment form of the brachytherapy performed in ambulatory care or with a short-term hospitalization, as could be evidenced in our current publication. Overall, the Team of the West German Prostate Center at the KLINIK am RING  performed over 2500 brachytherapies (seed implantations and afterloading).

We are finding the appropriate treatment for patients of all risk groups: on a case-to-case basis, we offer interstitial radiation therapy, mono-therapy (seed implantation), or combined radiation therapy (HDR afterloading)

Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH):

Because of the recent technical developments in this area, new and minimal invasive treatment methods are now possible. The methods available are continuously evaluated and integrated into the service spectrum of the Prostate Center as soon as international data has evidenced the benefits of the selected method.

For example, since January 2008, our center is using a new laser technique, the so-called LIFE laser therapy with the EvolveTM diode laser system 150.

An essential advantage is the high wattage of the diode lasers and the thereby resulting greater evaporation effect. Meaning that patients with an already greatly enlarged prostate can enjoy a minimal invasive laser therapy, which in the past was reliant on the classical trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP). The duration of the  treatment is overall shorter and therefore affects the cardiovascular system less severely.
